I'm a photographer and graphic designer based in Berlin. In my work I keep circling the same thing: how an image holds on to what we've seen, and how much of that is really memory rather than record.
I'm not only after events or stories. What I look for is a composition that still works once it's cut loose from where it was taken–an image you can't take in at a glance, that stays open instead of using itself up. Both in photography and in design, what draws me in is how visual structure makes meaning in the first place.
Working against a visual culture built for speed and quick impact, I go my way: tight framing, close attention to form, an image made to be looked at longer.
I studied Communication Design at the Peter Behrens School of Arts in Düsseldorf and spent two abroad semesters at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, where narrative photography became a bigger part of my work.
A lot of what I photograph is landscape and the leftovers of architecture–places that still carry the shape of what they used to be. I keep coming back to sites caught mid-change: half in use, half given up, somewhere between standing and falling apart.
